One 2026 audit of 1,700 businesses found 88.1% did not appear in ChatGPT recommendations. Here’s what that sample suggests about AI visibility — and what it does not prove.

Ayear ago, almost nobody asked an AI assistant which dentist to call, which lawyer to hire, or which contractor to trust with a major renovation. Today, nearly half of them do.
According to BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, the share of consumers using generative AI to find a local business climbed from 6% to 45% in a single year — one of the fastest shifts in buyer behavior local marketing has ever measured. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity who the best HVAC company in town is, and it won't guess. It will synthesize an answer from reviews, websites, and business listings across the web — then say a name out loud.
The uncomfortable part is what happens next.
Researchers at SOCi tracked how often ChatGPT actually recommends the same local businesses that show up prominently in Google's map results. The gap is stark: businesses that reliably appear in Google's local 3-pack for a given search show up in ChatGPT's recommendations only 1.2% of the time, while Google surfaces roughly 36% of visible local businesses for the same queries. AI, in other words, is roughly 30 times more selective than the search engine most businesses have spent years optimizing for.
A separate audit by Omni Eclipse manually checked 1,700 verified businesses across 32 industries in three countries, comparing natural buying queries against what ChatGPT actually recommended. The result: 88.1% of businesses were completely absent from the answer. Even businesses ranking on page one of Google were invisible in ChatGPT 77% of the time. Two search engines — two entirely different sets of winners.
The instinct is to assume good SEO automatically means good AI visibility. It doesn't. Traditional search ranks pages. AI search evaluates entities — it's trying to determine, in a single confident sentence, whether a business actually deserves to be recommended for what someone specifically needs. That shifts which signals matter most:
Google AI Overviews — the AI-written summary block now appearing above traditional results — show up on as many as 68% of local search queries, according to ALM Corp's 2026 analysis. In a growing share of searches, that summary is the only thing a potential customer reads before deciding who to call.
Not every industry is affected equally, and not every industry has an equal window to fix it. Research from GrowthPro AI's 2026 client data shows AI-search adoption is highest in exactly the categories where customers do the most research before they buy: healthcare, legal, financial services, and home improvement — high-consideration purchases where trust has to be established before someone ever picks up the phone.
If your business sits in one of those categories, the shift has already reached your customers. The only open question is whether it's reached you yet.
Here's the part that should change how seriously you take this: buyers already trust what AI tells them. BrightLocal's research found that 42% of consumers now trust AI-generated recommendations as much as they trust written reviews, and 40% say they trust AI outright for local business decisions.
That's not a future trend to prepare for. That's the present. A business owner who built a reputation over decades of referrals is now being evaluated by a system that has never met a single one of their customers — and that system's answer carries nearly the same weight as a five-star review.
None of this requires becoming a different kind of business. It requires making the business you already are legible to a system that reads signals, not reputations. The path is narrower and faster than most people assume:
The businesses doing this now aren't necessarily bigger, older, or better-funded than their competitors. They're simply the ones who noticed the rules changed while there was still time to act on it.
We'll check whether you appear in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and the other places your next customer is already asking — then show you exactly what to do about it.
